Based on the Battle Chasers comic book series which ran during the late ’90s and into the early 2000s, Battle Chasers: Nightwar is a turn-based RPG that originally launched on console and PC a couple of years ago. But as with many mobile ports, the game actually feels most at home on the touchscreen, and as someone who doesn’t love turn-based RPGs I can’t believe how much I enjoyed playing through this when it hit the App Store over the summer. No knowledge of the comic books is necessary to enjoy the characters and story here either, and even knowing it’s a port of an existing game it’s hard not to be impressed playing a game with this amount of depth and such a high level of quality on a mobile device.
Having a good village layout is super important, especially if you’re playing to win “trophies,” which come from successfully attacking a village or defending your own and are used to rank players. Choices have to be made at the lower levels of the game as there are few walls to defend buildings but as the game progresses and your village becomes larger, there are plenty of options.
Games aren’t just better than ever for kids, the means of creating them are, too. The best example of that is Roblox: a massively multiplayer online game creation platform and, since it is so easy to make something fun, there are millions of Roblox games to enjoy. User-generated creations allow you to weather the existential threat of a natural disaster, try your hand as a pizza maker, and take a break away from it all with a spot of peaceful scuba diving. From sims to RPGs and adventure titles, there are loads of free Roblox games to enjoy with over 100 million other pals in online games. Think of it like Minecraft and LittleBigPlanet smooshed together and forged into an entire platform.
Monument Valley returns to the list with the release of Monument Valley 2. Both games are still very excellent. In fact, they both have virtually identical game play mechanics and graphics. The player adventures through Escher-style puzzles where levels are movable to complete the path using illusions. The premise is still charming and the Monument Valley franchise continues to stand as a couple of the best mobile games ever. Swordburst 2: Again, if you’re tired of guns and looking for something fantasy based then Swordburst 2 is a solid option! I really like the look and overall atmosphere of the game. However, I do think the early portion of it is pretty grindy, and they could add quests or abilities a lot earlier to make things more fun. If you’re looking for a RPG type game though, this is a pretty good option to give a shot. Strucid: This is obviously heavily influenced by Fortnite, so if you’re looking for that style of game then this is very well made. The building is pretty solid and you don’t have to worry about harvesting to replenish your resources. It’s also nice if you’ve played Fortnite before and don’t want to play against people who play hardcore.
